Big Z Crowned Chairman for Newspaper Vendors

By Alim Jalloh

Saidu Turay aka Big Z was on Saturday 24th November 2018, crowned Chairman of the Sierra Leone News Vendors’ Association (SLNVA).

Delivering his victory speech, Big Z stated that the victory is not only for himself but for all vendors in Sierra Leone and called on all to take the association seriously.

“We are not prisoners and so we should transform our organization to one which will benefit every member. I am open to work with other organizations, so as to tap new ideas and be innovative. We have to change the perception of the public relegating us to inferiority category or less important people in society, and nobody is going to do that to us.

We have to take the lead so new members will come in,” he said and promised to engage the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Publishers, Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA) and other partners for support. Raymond Sesay, the defeated candidate, congratulated Big Z and called on his supporter to work with the winning team, as they are all working in the interest of the organization.

“It is a family contest and I see Big Z as my elder brother. Perhaps this is a learning process for me to win the next election,” he said, adding, ‘we should not be seen as people who only sell newspapers, but as people who contribute to national development,” he ended.

Lahai Bangura, outgoing chairman of the association, stated that the organization was established in the 1990s, but was developing at slow pace. He added however that with the current structure in place by his team, “we will now see a different and robust association that will move faster in terms of developing its members.” He also stated that the News Vendors’ Annual Awards will commence next year in grand style.
