ex-Paramount Chief of Mambolo Chiefdom, Bai Sherbora Somano Kapen
The former Secretary General of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and senior Cabinet Minister, Dr. Prince Alex Harding has told newsmen that he was stepping down from the race of Chairman of the party in support of the ex-Paramount Chief of Mambolo Chiefdom, Bai Sherbora Somano Kapen because SLPP is about to witness the repeat of history .
Speaking at a mammoth press conference attended by hundreds of party members held at the SLPP National headquarters on Wallace Johnson Street in Freetown Wednesday, Dr. Harding said records have it that the first leader of the party (SLPP) was the late Bai Farama Tass III, a Paramount Chief and a Temne who hailed from Kambia District, Northern province. He said as God would have it, a consensus candidate, Chief Somano Kapen III, shares identical traits and status. “He is also a chief, a Temne and hails from Mambolo, Kambia District, Northern Province” Dr. Harding explained, adding that both of them abdicated their respective thrones due to undue political pressure all because of their love for the SLPP. He observed that the relevance of the historical coincidence has direct bearing on the theme of Wednesday’s press conference “Unity and Stability”. He informed the gathering that in the yester years of SLPP, late PC Bai Farma Tass III served as the fulcrum around which the party galvanized to achieve unity and stability which helped the party to be electable. “In a similar manner, I have no iota of doubt that Chief Somano Kapen III, when elected as National Chairman and Leader of the SLPP, will provide the needed leadership around which the party will be able to attain unity and stability.
The former Transport Minister said Chief Kapen is an academic par excellence, a traditionalist and above all possesses the relevant working experience for such a complex job which is much harder than physics or commercial business commonly called politics. He described Chief Kapen as a seasoned administrator having served in the civil service for many years.
Among other aspirants who declared support for Chief Somano Kapen at the press conference include the former Executive Secretary, ECOWAS, Dr. Abass Bundu and former Foreign Minister, Momodu Koroma who was deputized at the gathering by the former Bank Governor J.D. Rogers.
The press conference was chaired by renowned legal luminary, Hon. Lawyer Dr. Bu-Buakei Jabbi.
