SLBL hosts Annual Career & Talent Pool Day

Sierra Leone Brewery Limited, on Thursday 8th November 2018, hosted an annual career and talent pool day at the brewery’s compound at Wellington, an event which attracted students from various colleges and Universities in the country. Present at the ceremony were the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor Aiah Gbakima, Deputy Minister of Labour, Lansana Mohamed Dumbuya, heads of University Departments, the media and other guests.

 

Notable among the guest were students from across the Universities of Sierra Leone; which included FBC, IPAM, Njala, MMCET and UNIMAK who were invited to the occasion to give them an insight on the operations and the various functions of the SLBL’s departments and exposing them to the opportunities they can tap in as potential employees.

 

Speaking on the occasion of the annual SLBL Career and Talent Pool Day, the Managing Director of the company, Daaf Van Tilburg said that the event is geared towards increasing the employability of young Sierra Leonean graduates and this year’s theme is “Sierra Leone Brewery Ltd. Employer of Choice”.

 

He said that every year students all over the country are provided with the opportunity to learn about the SLBL as a 1st class manufacturing business and also serve as a forum for managers in the business to impart their knowledge and experience on their career journey to students, by providing them with the necessary guidance required for the job market, especially in the manufacturing industry.

 

This event he went on, seeks to create an avenue for students to be well informed about career opportunities and talent management agenda of the SLBL. The objective, he stressed, is to expose students to career related to their course work and to also have a better understanding of the type of subject areas to choose from and when to engage in a career in a manufacturing environment.

 

In his brief statement, Corporate Relations Manager Albert Ojo Collier gave a brief history of the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited highlighting the stages of development under gone since its inception in the country to date.

 

Giving the Key Note address, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor Aiah Gbakima, said “we understand our responsibility as a ministry and are committed to work towards an equitable and inclusive society.” He further disclosed that challenges in the country’s education and job security in the past decade have emphasized the importance of the pursuit of knowledge and the role of employers such as SLBL in Sierra Leone.

 

He commended the SLBL for their efforts as partners in growth and contributing immensely in job creation and career development for thousands of Sierra Leoneans.

 

Mrs. Zorah Anthony, head of Human Resource, said the annual career and talent pool day is to give students an insight into the operations and workings of the Sierra Leone Brewery, so that students who might have desire to work for the company will be more abreast on what is expected from them if they intend to work as an intern. She stressed the fact that students should have the desire to expand their knowledge beyond what they are taught on the blackboard. Mrs. Zorah added that the Sierra Leone Brewery is committed to support and improve the knowledge of students on matters of manufacturing.

 

Other speakers like the Deputy Minister of Labour, Lansana Mohamed Dumbuya and Francis Kamara,the Brewery’s Safety and Environment Engineer also made short statements.

 

The ceremony was climaxed by questions and answer sessions in which the students were also given the opportunity to ask questions which were responded to by the various managers. Various sessions for in-depth discussions were held, after which refreshments were served.
